Obituary

George A. “Geo” “Sonny” Billings, 80, of Gardner, died peacefully, Sunday, July 19, 2020, in his residence surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Born in Gardner on January 10, 1940, he was the son of the late George A. Billings Sr. and Irene (Montville) Dowd. George was a United States Navy Veteran serving from 1959 to 1963, where he served on the USS Glacier, and received the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon and the Antarctic Service Medal. He was a material scheduler employed by Digital Equipment Corporation for several years. He was a cook previously employed by Baldwinville Nursing Home.

George was a parishioner of Annunciation Parish/ Holy Spirit Chapel of Gardner. He was a member of the Gardner Senior Center, American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, Knights of Columbus Council 396 of Gardner, and was the Scout Leader for Boy Scout Troop 4 of Gardner. George enjoyed going fishing, hunting, golfing, hiking, camping, gardening, and being outdoors. He was a teacher and a mentor for several people. He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.

George is survived by his wife of 55-years, Gloria (LeBlanc) Billings of Gardner; two sons, John Billings and his wife Eileen of Gardner and Timothy Billings and his wife Angela of Everett, WA; one daughter, Jennifer Ullah and her husband Hanif of West Roxbury; five grandchildren, Brady, Eric, Faith, and Rachel Billings, and Enaam Ullah; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Kaitlyn Billings; and his sister, Emily Brewer.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 31, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. in Annunciation Parish at Holy Spirit Chapel, 50 Lovewell Street, Gardner, MA. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA.

There are no calling hours.

Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, restrictions currently set in by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be in place at George’s service.  Current guidelines set by the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, which is ten persons in the chapel, will be enforced. Overflow may stand outside.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Scouts of America Troop 4, 125 Oak Street, Gardner, MA 01440, or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA 01440, or to Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center, 268 Central Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
