Obituary

Judith J. (Marquis) Burke, 84, of Gardner, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by care and comfort, following a brief illness.

Born in Winchendon on July 16, 1941, she was the cherished daughter of the late Walter and Beatrice (Lashua) Marquis. Judy graduated with the Class of 1959 from Murdock High School and later became the proud co-owner and operator of Burke's Market in Gardner. Through her years there, she became a familiar and welcoming presence in the community, a role she held with dedication until her retirement.

Judy lived a life rooted in love, kindness, and family. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she found happiness in life's simple joys-quiet moments spent knitting, getting lost in a good book, and savoring her daily cup of coffee. A true animal lover, Judy had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs and cats, who brought her endless companionship and comfort.

The holiday seasons were especially dear to her heart. From Christmas Eve and Easter to Thanksgiving and every gathering in between, Judy delighted in traditions that brought her family together. Above all else, family was her greatest treasure, and she lovingly shared stories and memories that will live on-especially her favorite question, always asked with a smile, "How did the angel get on top of the Christmas tree?"

Judy is survived by her loving daughters, Ann-Marie Ouellet and her husband France of Gardner and Lisa A. Burke of Delanco, NJ; her son, Robert W. Burke and his wife Rhonda of Sarasota, FL; her adored grandchildren, Autumn and Michael Ouellet; step grandchildren Abbey Kraus and Austin Hall; one step great granddaughter Kennedy Kraus; her sister, Cathy Ann Smith of Athol; her nephew, Bradley Smith; and several cousins, all of whom will forever hold her memory close.

She was predeceased by her husband Robert F. Burke; her daughter, Julie Burke; and her brother, Peter Marquis.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will take place at Crystal Lake Cemetery, Crystal Lake Drive, Gardner, MA.
