James E. Maattala, 75, of Gardner, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
Born in Gardner on March 7, 1950, James was the son of the late Edwin F. and Valeria A. (Bacewski) Maattala. He was a proud graduate of Gardner High School, Class of 1968. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in education from Fitchburg State University in 1972. James devoted his career to teaching at Clinton High School. There, he shared his knowledge and passion for learning mathematics with students for many years.
James was a former member of Sacred Heart Church and Holy Spirit Chapel of Annunciation Parish in Gardner. He enjoyed staying active through running and loved spending time watching his favorite sports. James especially treasured hosting friends and family. He often gathered them to share good conversation and lively discussions about the latest football game or current events.
James is survived by his sister, Penelope A. Maattala of Gardner, as well as several cousins and many beloved friends who will miss him dearly.
A Calling Hour will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA. Funeral Services will follow in the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held privately at Notre Dame Cemetery, West Street, Gardner, MA.
