Gensie M. Hazel, 92, of Gardner, MA died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Heywood Hospital of Gardner, after a very brief illness.
Born in Clinton, MA on October 16, 1933, Gensie was the daughter of the late Elia F. Angelini and Frances (Malderella) Angelini. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1951. Gensie loved her hometown and was proud of her Apple Blossom Queen designation.
Gensie married the love of her life, John M. Hazel, III in 1954 after a courtship that involved daily letter writing to carry them through the Korean War. Later, Gensie had a brief career in the secretary pool at General Electric before becoming mother to their four children.
Gensie, like her husband John, was a devout Catholic and recent parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor Church of Westminster. Both were active in the church and several local organizations including Special Olympics, ARC, and the Beacon of Hope.
She loved spending time in nature, equally enjoying shell collecting walks on the beach and walks in the woods with her beautiful golden retrievers. Favorite activities included sharing a fierce love with her grandchildren, luncheons with her three sisters, baking Italian cookies, and watching the bird feeders from her back porch swing.
Gensie also cherished the 54 years spent at the family camp in Ossipee, New Hampshire. So many memories with friends, neighbors, children and grandchildren originated from Gensie's 'Happy Place' in the mountains of New Hampshire.
Gensie is survived by her three sisters Connie Lind of Ayer, MA, Mary Dennen and her husband Hal of Fitchburg, MA and Joan Mullahy of Fitchburg, MA, two sons, Peter Hazel of Gardner and Kevin Hazel and his wife Donna of Hubbardston; one daughter, Mary Beth Hamel and her husband Bill of Center Ossipee, NH; grandchildren, Colleen Ali, Maura, Sean and Keith Hamel, Patrick Hazel, and Nikki Hazel; as well as several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved son, Michael Hazel. Gensie's husband of 71 years, John M. Hazel, succumbed to a brief illness one day before his wife's passing, ensuring that they would be together forever.
A period of visitation will be held Thursday, May 21, 2026 from 9:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. in St. Edward the Confessor Church, 10 Church Street, Westminster, MA. A mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow at St. Johns Cemetery, West Street, Gardner, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or at stjude.org or The Beacon of Hope Community Services, Inc.
