Alexander J"Alex" Vouzikas

Alexander "Alex" James Vouzikas, 85, of Gardner died peacefully Saturday, January 21, 2017 in Heywood Hospital of Gardner.
Born in Washington, D.C. on May 17, 1931, he was the son of the late James A. and Ellen L. (Lynard) Vouzikas.
Alexander graduated from Anacostia High School of Washington, D.C. with the Class of 1950. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and Political Science in 1964 from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He received his Master's Degree in Government Administration from the University of Colorado in 1975.
Alexander was a United States Korean War Coast Guard Veteran. He served from 1951 through 1954, and received the Good Conduct Medal.
He taught Management courses at Mount Wachusett Community College of Gardner from 1989 through 2009. He was the Director of Aquatics for the Ann Arundel County Parks and Recreation Department from 1964 through 1988, and he previously worked for the Washington and Athens Greece Central Intelligence Agency for seven years.
Alexander was a member of the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, Past President and member of the Board of Trustees for the Gardner Museum, Board of Directors for the Knowlton Foundation, member of the Chair City Club of Gardner, and member of the Wednesday Golf League of the Gardner Municipal Golf Course.
He enjoyed golfing, reading and playing tennis. Alexander was an avid swimmer who participated and received medals in the Senior Olympics in 1986 and 1987. He also officiated swim meets at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and was a volunteer for the Special Olympics.
Alexander leaves his wife of 57 years, Rebecca (Kiosses) Vouzikas of Gardner; two daughters, Anastasia Vx. Colby and her husband Will of E. Rindge, NH and Christina K. Vouzikas of Gardner; four grandchildren, Alexis Chestine, Nicholas Boudreau, Linnea and Toria Colby; niece, Ellen Gosselin and nephew Tom Kiosses. He was predeceased by his sister, Zoe Defonzo.
Funeral Services and burial with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon.
Calling hours will be held Monday, January 30th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner.
